GDS Platforms

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is situated at the heart of the Cabinet Office. Since its creation in 2011, GDS has worked with departments and Local Authorities to help in the delivery of services that meet the needs of users, save money, and improve the efficiency of the public sector. Their mission is to build a simple, joined-up and personalised experience of government for everyone. Using their unique position at the centre of government, they develop services that work for the user, however complex the underlying systems may be. They believe that ensuring things work for end users is the only way to realise the efficiencies that come with digital transformation.

GDS is on a once in a lifetime mission to change the way the government serves the public. Focused on tech for good, we deliver the realities that digital transformation promises. As part of the Senior Civil Service, you’ll benefit from the opportunity to change the future of government to benefit the UK’s and the world’s citizens

The Deputy Director of Digital Platforms will own the strategy, delivery, and live service of a suite of high-performing cross-government platform products known collectively as “Government-as-a-Platform” (GaaP). These include GOV.UK Pay, GOV.UK Notify, GOV.UK Design System and GOV.UK Platform as a Service.

This role will play a proactive role in GDS’s senior leadership team for a diverse and inclusive workplace and embedding a user-centric and outcome-focused culture throughout GDS.

As the Deputy Director of Digital Platforms, you will also:

  • Lead a team of over 120 technical and other specialists working across Bristol, London, and Manchester.
  • Set an ambitious and innovative strategy for the next five years, using data, insight, and user research to inform your approach.
  • Work across GDS to ensure our platforms form part of a larger coherent ecosystem and strategy for digital services across government.
  • Make strategically critical decisions about product, content and platform design that are driven by user research, data, and developments in the wider digital landscape.
  • Oversee each product to ensure they are properly maintained and running on supported, highly available, and secure technology platforms.
  • Join a network of digital, data, and technology experts in GDS and across government, focused on improving how people interact with the government online.
  • Share best practices and ensure collective efficiencies wherever possible; supporting and guiding our cross-government platforms and products to make digital services so good that people prefer to use them.
  • Represent the UK government in international forums to enhance UK influence and impact in the field of digital data and technology in the public sector around the world, and ensure that GDS and the UK government stay at the cutting edge.
  • Engage with a wide range of senior leadership and ministerial stakeholders to ensure buy-in for your strategic direction.

We’re interested in people who have:

  • A passion for building brilliant, accessible and simple digital services that put users first.
  • Strong inclusive leadership skills with the ability to set clear strategic direction whilst focusing on performance and delivery.
  • Experience of building and leading high performing diverse teams in a hybrid working environment
  • A proven track record of influencing effectively at the most senior levels, both internally and externally, in an environment where there are complex partnerships with conflicting priorities
  • Developed start-up products through into a mature run state
  • Delivered at scale digital transformational products in an agile environment

This exciting opportunity will allow everyone to have a seamless experience while using any of the gov platforms. It will also make it as easy as possible for departments to digitalise their services making their services seamless and consistent in line with GDS’s vision-

  • To be the single and trusted online destination for government information and services.
  • To offer joined-up services that solve whole problems and span multiple departments
  • To be a simple digital identity solution that works for everyone
