It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week!
I was diagnosed with ADHD in my mid 30s, in hindsight it was not a big surprise.
It was like a huge penny dropped, not just for me in the moment, but also being able to making sense of experiences and in this instance specifically, how work environments have shaped my experience. Looking back, I now see how culture, structure, and inclusivity have played a huge role in how I thrive or struggle at work.
For neurodivergent individuals, the right environment isn’t just a nice to have. It is the difference between inwardly struggling on a day to day basis to deliver without burning out, and being able to be open and honest and ultimately thriving in an environment that embraces everyone as an individual.
A workplace that fosters transparency, openness, safety, flexibility, and understanding, enables individuals to bring their best selves to work, thinking outside the box, problem-solving and bringing innovative and new ways of working to the table.
The reality is that neurodiversity doesn’t have to be, and isn’t an individual experience. It’s team and organisational wide opportunity. When organisations build awareness and create inclusive spaces, they empower individuals to succeed. When people are set up for success, organisations get the best output from individuals, higher engagement, fresh perspectives, and great performance.
As I continue to learn more about how my brain works, I’m also learning the power of thinking outside the box in a broader context, workplace, strategy, problem solving, and process, that truly support all kinds of thinkers.
When looking at what makes a great team, it is everyone’s unique attributes that, combined, can give the creativity, drive and enthusiasm to thrive for the overall goal of the organisation.
Create safe spaces for perfectly unique, individuals to be authentically themselves and reap the benefits of highly motivated, high performing and dedicated team!
